The Weimaraner has a muscular build and is used in hunting as a gun-dog to retrieve fowl. A dog that has been around for several centuries the Weimaraner was selectively bred in Germany centuries ago for the purpose of pointing, retrieving and hunting. The tail is often generally docked when the pup is about 2 days old. Weimaraner’s are often known as the silver ghost. Although the Weimaraner has webbed feet which aid it with swimming,  it often needs to be taught to swim.

FACTS ABOUT THE WEIMARANER

Size Male:    24-27 in (61-69 cm)
Female: 22-25 in (56-63 cm)

Weight Male:     55-70 lb  (25-32 kg)
Female:  50-65 lb (23-29 kg)
Temperament Weimaraner are affectionate and intensely devoted to their owners. They are intelligent but very strong willed. They need firm handling and early training although they will resist repetitive training.

The Weimaraner is protective of its territory and because of its strong hunting instinct should not be trusted with small animals.

Weimaraner have always had a close bond with humans and need to be treated as part of the family. They need companionship, so if you leave your Weimaraner alone for long periods it will become bored and destructive.

Good with children although the breed can be a bit boisterous for younger children.  Likes to bark.

Grooming Requires regular brushing and dry shampoo occasionally. Bathe with a mild soap when required.  Rubbing with a chamois will keep the coat gleaming.  Keep the nails trimmed and the nose should be protected from the sun in summer.
Exercise The Weimaraner requires regular, vigorous exercise so that it doesn’t get bored. A powerful dog that needs to be allowed time to run free
Living Area Weimaraner are relatively inactive inside but they require a good sized backyard to run around in.

Health
Prone to bloat so feed them 2-3 times daily rather than one large meal. Feed these dogs before exercising them. Weimaraner can suffer from hip dysplasia. But overall they are a hardy breed.
Life Expectancy 10-12 years
